Mark M. Souweidane, MD, Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College is the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Childhood brain tumors is his career focus. Dr. Souweidane counters neurosurgical convention by defining minimal access techniques that digress from established norms.
His career-long work with intraventricular endoscopic surgery has led toward an expanded horizon for surgical indications. Intraventricular tumor removal through a single portal endoscope is commonplace in his surgical repertoire. His experience with third ventricular colloid cysts, has arguably led to the largest single surgical series to date (> 200).
Dr. Souweidane spearheads a translational laboratory and clinical trial program using image-guided interventional therapeutics for pediatric brain tumors. He has designed and conducted investigator-initiated trials that employ a backbone of novel drug delivery including convection enhanced delivery (CED) for diffuse midline glioma (DMG), intra-arterial (IA) drug delivery for choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC), and laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) for low grade glioma (LGG).
In addition to his acclaim as a skilled neurosurgeon he is characterized by his spirited advocacy for children and their families. He resides in Manhattan with his wife and 2 sons and frequently escapes New York City to the Adirondack mountains.
